Heavy Period Bleeding or Menorrhagia: Is it Normal?

Karan Jogdand

What is Menorrhagia?

Heavy period bleeding or ‘Menorrhagia’ is the condition where you lose excessive amounts of blood during your periods. Heavy bleeding does not necessarily mean there is anything seriously wrong, but it can affect you both physically and emotionally, and cause disruption in your everyday life.

Because menstrual flow varies from woman to woman, it is difficult to define exactly what a ‘heavy period’ is. On an average you lose about 30–40ml of blood during your period, heavy menstrual bleeding is often considered to be 60ml or more in each cycle. Because it’s not very easy to measure blood loss, good indications that your blood loss is on the excessive side can include using an unusually high number of tampons or sanitary napkins, bleeding through to your clothes or bed sheets (flooding), or needing to use both tampons and napkins together.

What causes Heavy bleeding during Periods?

In some cases, the cause of heavy periods cannot be identified. However, there are several conditions that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding such as

  • PCOS
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Possibly even cancer
  • Iron deficiency anaemia can occur in women who experience heavy periods and is caused by lack of iron which is required to make red blood cells. Feeling tired and rundown are common symptoms of anaemia, but it can easily be treated with iron tablets prescribed by a GP and by eating iron-rich foods.

Just remember that you are the best judge of what is normal for your menstrual cycle. If things seem out of the ordinary, it’s always best to get checked out by a healthcare professional.
